En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.

Plein Air artists paint natural light, using color to define form and generally paint "ala prima," laying down a scene with quick broad, colorful brush strokes, foregoing the typical 'building up' of paint. Depending on the light and weather, Plein Air paintings are generally done in one session.

Painting on location is both exhilerating and daunting.
The meaning, for me, lies directly in the experience itself... which may or may not translate to the nuance of the picture.

The paintings shown are the results of some of my excursions with other fellow painters who enjoy the rigors of tromping through the woods.
